Bushwick Leaders High School is a public high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Many of the students and their families struggle with difficult life circumstances, such as living in poverty, being undocumented and witnessing neighborhood violence. Some are homeless and living in family shelters, while others live doubled-up with relatives. The school also has a high percentage of students classified as Special Education. Due to these multiple stressors, pathways to academic achievement are full of obstacles for the students, and prospects for personal accomplishment are few and far between.
Good Shepherd Services at Bushwick Leaders provides the youth with opportunities to positively engage with their school, their community and each other, through the provision of youth development activities and group counseling. The program also provides the emotional support students seek, through individual counseling, advocacy within the school and engagement with parents. Tutoring and in-school programmatic supports assist students in achieving more academically.
The passion and dedication of the staff, expressed through relationships and programming, allows young people to explore their potential and reach for higher expectations as they grow in confidence and leadership.
There is one GSV at Bushwick Leaders High School. The GSV at Bushwick Leaders is a full Team member and active part of program implementation, as well as its design. The GSV carries a caseload and provides individual counseling as well as facilitates groups. Previous experience with counseling is not necessary, as the GSV receives much support through regular supervision and ongoing clinical learning. Like all members of the GSS Team, the GSV fulfills many roles – facilitating and supporting after-school activities, assisting in Service Learning and community events, and reaching out to parents and working with families. The GSS program at Bushwick is always growing and changing, and the GSV is expected to be creative in their work, contribute their ideas, and take initiative.
